Project Scope: This project involved the construction of a new Fish By-Pass Channel and Fish Ladder and associated works in and adjacent to the Mangatangi Stream to allow spawning fish to migrate from the Tasman Sea to Lake Taharoa.

The scope of construction works involved in the contract included:

  • Construction of a fish ladder extension.
  • Formation of a fish by-pass channel by cut and fill method with associated subsoil drainage, geo-synthetic clay lining, rock armouring and baffle rocks.
  • Construction of a fish friendly culvert with upstream and downstream manhole transitions.
  • Construction of an upstream sheet pile headwall.
  • Construction of an in-stream driven sheet pile weir
  • Excavation and armouring works for a weir plunge pool and downstream fish pass entrance
  • Construction of an armoured in-stream downstream weir and ramp
