Greg Dodd – General Manager
The Spartan team is led by Greg Dodd, a professional engineer; Greg has an ideal track record for the Spartan leadership role. He has managed civil engineering projects ranging from small to very large by NZ standards giving him the ability to balance the efficiency requirements of a small fast moving organisation with the professional systems approach demanded by the modern construction industry. Past projects in which Greg had a leadership role are the Britomart Transport Interchange, Auckland; Coal Handling Facility for Port of Tauranga and the Huntly Power Station “e3p” civil construction work. In addition to the above projects, Greg has spent many years in Singapore in a design and construction capacity on complex ground engineering projects. Greg is engineering driven which underpins the Spartan culture of innovation in construction solutions.
Mark Gerrand – Operations Manager
Spartan’s Operations Manager Mark Gerrand is also a professional engineer who has been involved in the management of three major construction projects prior to commencing with Spartan Construction. These consisted of the Clandeboye Milk Powder Drier Project, Britomart Station and the Huntly Power Station ‘e3p’ Project. Mark applies both his design knowledge and construction experience to enable the smooth running of projects while maintaining a “no blame” culture. His management of all technical quality and safety aspects of construction projects ensure that the project is completed to the satisfaction of all parties.
Hendrik Wortman – Commercial & Marketing Manager
Hendrik brings 25 years of construction and management experience to Spartan in particular in the fields of quarrying and aggregates and mechanical plant and equipment. Hendrik has both greenfielded and developed numerous successful businesses over the years associated with the construction industry. He also brings an environmentally friendly bias to Spartan Construction with a specialty of promoting and attaining sanctions for the use of alternative and recycled materials.
Jonathan Chandler - Project Manager
Jonathan Chandler is an accomplished Project Manager who has 13 years construction site experience throughout New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom including construction of both Civil, Structural and Multidisciplinary projects. Jonathan is effective in identifying potential issues relating to safety, the environment, programme and quality and he takes early steps to mitigate potential problems down the line. He has a continual drive for excellence in Safety, Quality and Environmental performance.
Project Site Manager / Supervisors
The Spartan site management and supervisory team consist of a mixture of youth and experience encompassing all aspects of Civil Construction.
Site Manager, Tony Robertson's key achievements in the recent years are his key roles in the Port of Tauranga Coal Handling Facility and the Huntly Power Station "e3p" Project. Throughout Tony's 26 years with Downer Construction he has obtained a wide construction experience in ground works and concrete structures including temporary works and falsework, sheet piling and related safety management.
Joe Fluhler is a qualified Civil Engineer who’s got hands-on experience from being a qualified Plumber, Gasfitter and Drainlayer.
Karl Kavanagh has 30 years’ experience in New Zealand and the United Kingdom in Building and Drainage Works.
Brad Wymer is a Carpenter, who has extensive practical experience with Concrete, Formwork, Drainage and Pump station pipelines.
John Flay has a passion for machinery and has significant experience working with Bulk Earthworks, Civil Contracting and Roading Projects.
Jared Spencer is a qualified Plumber and Gasfitter, with a broad knowledge of all Construction Sub-Trades.
Andre Bakkerus is an experienced Structural Supervisor, with more than 10 years' Civil Construction Site experience.

Spartan’s directors Graeme Lee, John Illingsworth and Clive Tilby have an impeccable track record in the NZ construction industry for integrity, reliability and high-performance management. Their experience encompasses almost every aspect of civil and multi-disciplinary works achieved over the years in a number of NZ’s medium to large blue chip construction companies.
